DISCLAIMER:

This video includes an interview with Addiction Psychiatrist, Dr. Patricia Halligan, who explains the increase in long term benzodiazepine prescribing, linking it to both the deprescribing of opioids and lack of knowledge on how to deprescribe benzos safely.

She describes how Benzodiazepine Use Disorder typically presents in the office, and teaches the viewer how to effectively and slowly, deprescribe benzodiazepines, in a safe, research-supported manner.

This very comprehensive video goes over how to convert benzodiazepines and Z drugs to Valium, outlines the rate of successive cuts of Valium dosage during the Valium taper, offers deprescribing letters/pamphlets for patients, and goes over ways to treat anxiety and insomnia without using benzodiazepines.

Three case presentations are discussed, which demonstrate how to do a Valium taper from start to finish, including, most helpfully, how to talk effectively to your patients before and during benzo discontinuation, build your patients a village of support, and offer several adjunctive non-addictive medications that may be helpful during the taper.
